Classic Comics Color Today’s Pop Stars | Flare.com

While I was never really into reading comics, I have always been a fan of the stories and spent a large amount of my TV time watching these heroes and villains. Below is a great article I found on Flare.com – take a look at how some of today’s pop stars are being influenced by these bad*ss babes.

Superheroine Chic

Super alter ego: She-Ra

It should come as no surprise to anyone that we paired Lady Gaga with She-Ra, the Princess of Power and the most powerful woman in the universe. Both are characterized by their otherworldly costumes and long blonde hair. To get her makeup look, Ma says to start with a matte bronzer two or three shades darker than your natural skin tone. Pay special attention to the areas around the temples, jaw line, sides of the nose, eye sockets, cheeks, collarbone and cleavage. “And remember to blend, blend, blend!” Finish the look with scarlet red lips.

Makeup: To translate the look to every day, soften your lips with a tinted balm.

FLARE picks: CoverFX Bronzed FX, $28, at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, Jean Coutu, select Sephora and The Bay; Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Hellbent, $18, at sephora.com; Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Chunky Cherry, $19, at Clinique counters nationwide.

Hair: “If you aren’t already a blonde, you can’t really pull this off at home,” Robinson says, as you’ll likely need to use bleach to lighten your hair—something only a professional should ever do! But for those who are already blonde and want to lighten their hair a few shades, Robinson advises touching up your roots every four to five weeks to keep the colour uniform.

FLARE picks: Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 in Lighest Blonde, $16, at drugstores nationwide.

Super alter ego: Storm

Another character from the X-Men world, Storm is known for her sweet disposition and awe-inspiring ability to manipulate the elements. Sounds like Beyoncé to us! Another thing they have in common is a luminous glow. To achieve Beyoncé’s effortless beauty, Ma says to invest in a good foundation. Use your fingertips to blend it well around the eyes, cheekbones, temples, lips, bridge of your nose and the collarbone. Follow up with a highlighter on areas like your brow bone or cleavage.

Makeup: To translate the look to every day, apply highlighter only to select areas, like cheekbones and eyes.

FLARE picks: Armani Lasting Silk Foundation, $65, at Holt Renfew; NARS Multiple in Orgasm, $46, at The Bay, Holt Renfrew, Sephora and MURALES locations.

Hair: If you’re not already fair-haired, Robinson says to stay within two shades of your natural hair colour or you’ll look off-balance. If you really want a dramatic change, see a professional and don’t try to DIY it.

FLARE picks: Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 in Medium Champagne Blonde, $16, at drugstores nationwide.

Super alter ego: Vixen

Talk about shape-shifters! It’s no wonder we’ve paired Nicki Minaj with Vixen, a superheroine renowned for her ability to take on the powers of any creature in the animal kingdom. And it’s all about creating a fierce mouth. Luckily, Ma points out, “techno colours are huge in lipstick this season!” She suggests using a matte lipstick in a striking fuchsia or bold red. And to make it more long wearing, skip the lip balm before application.

Makeup: To translate the look to every day, opt for a stain or lipgloss and keep the rest of your makeup natural.

FLARE picks: YSL Rouge Pour Couture in Le Fuchsia, $37, at Holt Renfew and select Bay and MURALES stores; YSL Gloss Pure in Pure Hibiscus, $34, at Holt Renfrew and select Bay and MURALES stores.

Hair: Anyone can do the background colour themselves, Robinson says. It’s what happens on top that may be tricky. If you opt to do it at home, Robinson advises using saran wrap or tin foil to separate the strands you want to highlight. Take a section of hair and lay it on your foil, brush colour over the hair and wrap the foil around it. But don’t do your background colour and highlights at the same time.

FLARE picks: Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 in Lightest Blonde (for the base), $16, at drugstores nationwide; Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 in Medium Brown (for the highlights), $16, at drugstores nationwide.

Super alter ego: Jean Grey aka Phoenix

Rihanna’s latest fiery hair transformation puts her in line with X-Men’s Jean Grey, a character recognized for her intensity and smarts. But the singer’s penchant for dramatic makeup also links her with Jean Grey’s alter ego Phoenix, a conflicted character who walks the line between good and evil. To get her look, Ma says to apply a highlighting eye shadow in the inner corner of eyes and lower eyelids. Then blend a matte eye shadow in a daring shade, like cherry or maroon, into the crease. Finish the look with black eyeliner and mascara.

Makeup: To translate the look to every day, go simple. Minimize the eye shadow and ease up on the liner. Ma advises: “Do this makeup in natural daylight rather than in your bathroom because you can see the intensity of the shadows better.”

FLARE picks: Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Midnight Cowboy, $19, at Sephora, select Shoppers and on urbandecay.com; NARS Single Eyeshadow in Grenadines, $26, at The Bay, Holt Renfrew, Sephora and MURALE locations; Lancôme Definicils High Definition Mascara in Black, $34, at all Lancôme counters and at lancôme.ca.

Hair: Women tend to shy away from doing red at home because they’re afraid of the results, but Robinson says otherwise: “There’s no reason why you can’t counteract a red that’s too bright with a darker shade on top. You can do a permanent colour one day and fix it the next.” As long as you start out with healthy hair and you don’t make a habit of it, back-to-back colourings won’t ruin your hair. She also points out that red is a reflective colour that will inevitably show through your darker strands.

FLARE picks: Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 in Light Auburn, $16, at drugstores nationwide.
